GA4 - How to Capture Session ID
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) has introduced noteworthy changes in the way sessions are calculated, distinguishing it from its predecessor (UA). While the direct access to Session IDs has become less straightforward, a readily available solution can be configured within GA4's Administration section.
Step-by-Step Guide:
-
Access your GA4 Account and Navigate to Admin: Log in to your GA4 account that is linked with ChannelMix. From the dashboard, proceed to the "Admin" section.
-
Custom Definitions in the Property Column: Under the "Admin" section, locate the "Property" column. Click on "Custom Definitions" within this column.
-
Creating a Custom Dimension: In the "Custom Definitions" area, choose to "Create Custom Dimension."
-
Configuring Event Parameter: Enter 'ga' into the provided "Event parameter" field. If you have already sent data to this property, the system should propose two recognized Event Parameters: 'ga_session_id' and 'ga_session_number.'
-
Generate Event-Scoped Custom Dimensions: Create distinct Event-scoped Custom Dimensions for each proposed parameter. Label these as 'GA Session ID' and 'GA Session Number' correspondingly.
-
Save Your Configuration: Once the custom dimensions have been created, remember to save your changes.
